This is by far one of my best-loved hikes in Western North Carolina.  Not only is Shortoff Mountain my favorite view from Lake James, the view of Lake James from Shortoff Mountain is also spectacular!  You will get some great exercise and be rewarded with panoramic views of Lake James and the Linville Gorge and Linville River.  Linville Gorge is called the “Grand Canyon of the East”.  Lake James can be seen as early as 1/2 mile up the trail and the view continues to expand and become more impressive as you hike.  Most websites will tell you the hike is 4.5 miles round trip; however the summit is only 1.3 miles from the trailhead.  This may not sounds very strenuous, but keep in mind the 1,300+ feet in elevation gain!  If you choose to keep hiking along the summit, the terrain changes to incorporate trees, plants, and wildflowers (depending on time of year).  There is even a rare natural pond!

The trailhead can be a little tricky to find if you have not been before.  Admittedly my first time trying to find it I thought for sure we were going the wrong way.  The trailhead is 2.5 miles down a dirt/gravel road called Wolf Pit Road off of NC-126.  It is a lefthand turn past the northern shore of Lake James and is easy to miss.  Once you arrive, parking can also be difficult on a crowded day and keep in mind there are no facilities.  I prefer this hike in fall or on a warm winter day due to a lack of shade along the trails.  I also highly recommend you bring water and definitely bring a water bowl if you hike with a pup!  The trail is rocky and steep with switchbacks so also wear appropriate shoes and clothing.  I like to layer because I always break a sweat.  There are numerous overlooks along the way and rock outcroppings to rest and take in the views.  They also make for some fantastic photo opportunities!

This is a perfect day hike and can be an overnight adventure with campsites on the summit. It is a strenuous hike but the awesome views are totally worth it!
